Biography

Nigel Batten, born 1955.

Although I have been painting since my early teens, having been inspired by a lecture on Pablo Picasso’s painting ‘Guernica’. It wasn’t until 1990 that I took a more serious interest in producing work on a regular basis. For this website I have only included a cross section of work from the turn of the century.

The oldest question all artists are asked is; what is it that inspires you? In my case it’s similar to Tony Hancock’s ‘The Rebel!’ I try to get my colours the right shape. I approach a blank canvas in the same way as a musician, playing around with a few chords, until something begins to happen. Occasionally I have a preconceived idea and if I’m lucky, as in my depiction of the 9/11 tragedy it amounts to something. This is also illustrated particularly on my paintings ‘The Dripping Tap of Terrorism’ and ‘The Full Moon Party’.

I hope you find some of these pictures enjoyable to look at.
